Happy New Year, readers!
On Saturday night (I was supposed to publish this yesterday but the hangover took over), the world grew one year older and we celebrated the start of 2017. For most of us, it was a welcome relief from the relentless misery of last year.
Over the past 365 days, we lost some of the most iconic names from the worlds of music, film and the arts, including long-time vegan Prince in April. There were senseless attacks on minority groups like the Orlando LGBTQ massacre in June and misogynist, racist and climate-change denier Donald Trump was elected as America’s next president.
Sidenote, it wasn’t all terrible. As The Independent reported, 2016 was a fantastic year for animals.
But all the doom and gloom of last year can only mean that 2017’s fresh start seems that bit brighter. But instead of losing weight, saving money and the usual New Year’s resolutions you fail to keep every year, I have seven suggestions that are totally achievable in 2017.
- Go vegan this January
If you’re not already following a plant-based diet, take the Veganuary challenge and ditch dairy for 31 days. If you are vegan, apply the challenge to your makeup, toiletries or wardrobe and switch out your usuals for vegan and cruelty-free alternatives. There are meal plans, tip sheets and all sorts of helpful info on the Veganuary website, and you can read more about vegan shopping on the high street here.
- Donate to Give And Makeup
If you are swapping out your old make-up, don’t waste what you already have. Consider donating your products to a charity like Give And Makeup, who deliver them to women in need, supporting Refuge, Women’s Aid and the Warrior Women Project. Get more details, including product restrictions, here.
Packed up lots of my old non-#vegan or #crueltyfree make-up (and some that is!) for @carolinehirons #GiveAndMakeup, where it will go to Reguge and women who need it the most. Please consider donating anything you have and don't need anymore, as the power of makeup to make you feel human again is underestimated! All details on carolinehirons.com
- Subscribe to a vegan beauty box
Now that your makeup bag is free from animal-derived ingredients, find your new favourite products through a vegan beauty subscription box. For £15, every three months The Vegan Kind will post a selection of beauty, skincare, hair products and cosmetics through your letterbox. One of my previous boxes included my favourite makeup brush brand, Spectrum.
- Try Clean Beauty
Ethical, cruelty-free and based in London, Clean Beauty Co are one of my favourite brands for simple scrubs, body oils and shave balms. Their book, Clean Beauty, has easy recipes for hair, body and skincare products you can whip up in your own kitchen. Pre-order it now, or buy Clean Beauty when it’s out on January 19th, £18.
- Wrap up in Jakke
The days might be getting longer from now on, but the weather is still cold. Stay faux and shop Jakke’s Crayola bright faux fur jackets online or in urban Outfitters. I love the animal prints, but this red would get SO much wear.
- Get lippy with Kat Von D
I am OBSESSED with Kat Von D beauty. Ever since I tried Lolita II, her Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks have been my favourite vegan beauty product to rave about to friends. So imagine the excitement when she announced that throughout 2017 25 NEW shades will launch, including a metallic top coat called Gold Skool, Ichiban blues, grass greens, new nudes, oxblood reds and bright oranges. Follow @katvondbeauty and @thekatvond for all the launch dates.
25 NEW @katvondbeauty Everlasting Liquid Lipstick shades! They all have different launch dates so I suggest following @katvondbeauty for the best launch updates! I just wanted to show you some awesomeness coming out to look forward to! I threw in a few extra in there, too, cuz I love you: •Gold Skool is a metallic, longwear top-coat, that I'll be launching for @katvondbeauty's 10 year anniversary!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT'S COMING UP?! 🙀 •XO – is the richest ox-blood I've ever worn and is already available in the #BetterTogether collection at sephora. And if you guys love it, I'll make sure to bring it back in full size form! •Lovecraft is gonna be selling individually this Spring. •Plath and Roxy will be launching in full size in Feb! •and the first shades we are launching will be the last 6 nudes at the end of this vid: Muñeca, Ophelia, Ludwig, Sanctuary, Hawkwind, and Crucifix!! I believe they're launching coming up this next week?? Again, I suggest following @katvondbeauty for official release dates, and WAY BETTER swatches than me! 🖤 SONG: "Vision One" by Röyksopp
- Add Stella McCartney’s menswear collection to your wish list
What took her so long?! Stella McCartney announced her very first menswear collection in November, featuring sustainable styles and non-leather sneakers – just avoid the wool suiting. See the Brit-cool collection here.
